10 Photos That Will Make You Want To Visit The Algarve

July 16, 2015 by @VanessaRivers

Despite being one of Europe’s smallest countries, Portugal has one of the largest exclusive economic zones due to the fact that the sea they govern is eighteen times the size of their land mass! The fish in the Portuguese sea are considered to be some of the best in the world. And there are over 1,000 top surf spots, amazing diving, and some of the globes most beautiful beaches. It is because of this, and the beauty of the land, that Portugal is called the European California.

In March I spent ten amazing days in Portugal. We started in Lisbon (7 Reasons Why You’ll Love Lisbon) then drove down to the southernmost region, the Algarve, to spend four days surfing in Lagos (The Surf Experience Surf Hostel). I loved Lisbon, but the Algarve stole my heart. The scenic drive along the sea reminded me of driving the Pacific Coast Highway. There were so many amazing places to stop and take photos that I felt overwhelmed with excitement much of the drive. I also felt, for brief moments, like I was back on the Central Coast of California, where I grew up. And as an expat living in London for the last three years, it was comforting to feel like I was home, even just for a short time.

Wow, this is really crazy that I found this blog because I’m from the central coast too. Lived in Templeton most of my life, but I love the coast. I surf at Cayucos & Morro Bay mostly, but that’s really cool that Portugal is similar to our area. I’ve been wanting to take a Portugal/Spain trip, I’ll have to make sure I hit the Algarve at some point. Thanks for the post!
