Adventure BUDGET Hiking HOTEL REVIEWS South America

Southern Brazil Adventures

December 17, 2015 by @VanessaRivers

As we approach the end of the year, I can’t help but think of one of the best trips of my life. This time three years ago, I was packing my bags for an 8 day adventure through southern Brazil, lead by Anthony Ippolito of Southern Brazil Adventures. I visited a handful of gorgeous beaches, swam, surfed, went horseback riding through breathtaking mountain ranges, white water rafting through the jungle, repelled into canyons, cliff jumped into waterfalls, ate delicious Brazilian food and drank way too many caipirinhas! And I can’t forget the barn parties where we danced the night away by fire light, playing guitar, singing, laughing and feeling the kind of pure joy that can only be felt when you take the time to truly disconnect from technology and your everyday life.

The accommodations are modest. Pousada Morro Grande is a 5th generation working ranch, nestled in the Serra Geral Mountains. They have very little, but everything they have they will share with you on your amazing stay with them. While at the ranch, you will sleep in a bunk house that is attached to the main ranch house. The bunk rooms are small and simple (they sleep 2-4 depending on how many people are on your trip), and each bunk room has its own bathroom. Vera Machado, who is an excellent Brazilian cook and a total mama bear, will prepare your savory breakfasts and dinners, which are served in the common dining room. After breakfast, while Wendy Dahl leads you through a morning yoga session outside, in the fresh mountain air, Vitorli Machado, Vera’s husband, will saddle your horses and prepare your packs with water and lunch for a day-trip to the waterfalls or the “Uncle’s Ranch.”

You come as a guest, but you will leave as family!

This February, Southern Brazil Adventures is taking another group to Brazil, and you can join them! When you arrive in Florianopolis, you will stay at a modest hotel. This is a budget trip, created to allow you to have 8 days of unique and amazing experiences without breaking your bank. But I promise there will be nothing budget about the experience as a whole. I have been fortunate to have been on many amazing luxury trips over the years, but this trip to southern Brazil with Anthony Ippolito as my guide, while not “luxurious,” was still one of my favorite trips of all time!

Anthony Ippolito is an amazing tour guide. He is energetic and excited and very knowledgeable about Brazilian culture and he is a biologist, so he will teach you about the topography and the surrounding flora and fauna of the land. And of course, he speaks excellent Portuguese. If you can only take one vacation in 2016, I highly recommend going on this trip. It will leave you refreshed and excited about the world; and humbled and touched by a way of life that is simple and beautiful – full of love, passion and fun.

Vanessa!! We had SO much fun together when you were in Brazil with us. You were so enthusiastic and adventurous and really helped set the tone of the group. Thanks for the post as you have gracefully captured the essence of what we provide, an intimate experience with breathtaking nature and the wonderful cultures in that region of Brazil. We still have a few spots left for the trip in February and I know those that are on the trip will have a unique and memorable experience, guaranteed! I know we will be seeing you again with us soon!!!!! As we say, you come as guests, but leave as family! Love and hugs! Anthony and Wendy
