Founded in 1992, The Surf Experience is one of Portugal’s longest running surf schools. Their main surf house is in the center of “Old Town” Lagos, with additional accommodations nearby. The surf house boasts two large terraces, and has 6 brightly colored bedrooms, 5 shared double rooms, and a room with bunk beds that can accommodate up to four surfers. The place has a fun party-house vibe with classic Reef Girl posters on the walls and a lot of Star Wars memorabilia. The owners, Toby and Tobe, (Yes, they have the same name and are both Brits, and one of them is a DJ!) arrange group dinners out, weekly barbecues and evening outings, as well a free yoga lessons. And there is also a DVD library full of surf videos, if you feel like just relaxing after a long day of surfing. Breakfast, lunch, and surf lessons are included. I wasn’t sure if we should stay in Sagres or Lagos, but I am so glad we chose to stay in Lagos at The Surf Experience Surf House! The Algarve (southernmost region of the mainland) is absolutely gorgeous and home to over 1,000 surf breaks spread along the coast, but Lagos is the place you want to stay for an awesome surf adventure. “Old Town,” where their surf house is located, is home to tons of great restaurants and bars, all walking distance. And Praia Dona Ana, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen, is also walking distance from The Surf Experience.
My friend Dave and I spent the weekend exploring Lisbon (read 7 Reasons Why You’ll Love Lisbon) then drove down to Lagos for a 4-day surf adventure. The strong winds were not on our side, the water was unusually cold, and the swell was small, so we only got two days of surfing in, but hanging with the Tobe and Toby, and the rest of the crew more than made up for it. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcome. And our surf instructor, Grif, turned into an A+ tour guide when the waves proved too crappy to surf. Grif took us on an excursion across the Algarve, including must see spots like ‘The End of The World’ in Portugal, aka the most southwesterly spot in Europe.
High season, in the Algarve is April – September, so try to book your stay at the beginning of April or end of September to avoid the summer crowds and still get good weather and waves. I had such an awesome time at The Surf Experience that I already booked my next stay with them this fall, and I plan to return as often as I can while living in England. It is a short, three-hour flight from London to FARO, plus a 50-minute transfer to Lagos, and in less than four hours you’re in surfer’s paradise!
