On our second day in Brazil, after spending the afternoon surfing & enjoying caipirinhas at Praia Brava, we ended the day with dinner at one of the many cute beachfront restaurants in Florianopolis. Sadly I can’t remember the name of it due to way too much cachaca, but I do remember it was delicious! Brazilians cook very tasty sauces and seem to think the creamier the better (which I love!), so it was no surprise that it was at this restaurant that I had the best soup of my life, a pumpkin shrimp soup, served piping hot out of a huge hallowed gourd. Our crew of six managed to devour the entire generous family style serving in record time, and continued to scoop the insides of the gourd out, which had been cooking in the heat of the soup and was also delish. We ate so much our stomachs hurt and left full and happy, ready for bed.
Hotel Hola, where we stayed the first 3 nights, wasn’t glorious but it got the job done. It was clean, quiet and also one of the only hotels still available as Brazil goes off around NYE and like total dorks we waited till the very last-minute to book our rooms, so we were just relieved to have a place at all. And we were also happy to find they had a good complimentary breakfast that we could to roll out of bed for every morning, which proved crucial in combating our sugarcane hangovers!
So after breakfast we packed our “way too small for 6 people” Fiat van with all our bags, crammed ourselves in and headed out-of-town to our next destination, a ranch 3.5 hours southwest of Floripa, where we would be staying the next 5 days. But not before stopping for some white water rafting along the way!! Anthony our tour guide had set up a rafting excursion with Ativa Rafting company. It was my first time white water rafting and one of the funnest things I have ever done in my life!!!
