If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a place to relax and unwind, or the perfect luxury surf trip, you’ve found it at the Belmond Jimbaran Puri in Bali. My husband, Steve, and I were married a little over year ago and never had a proper honeymoon, and since I am an avid surfer, we decided to go to Bali for a belated minimoon (short honeymoon). This was my first time visiting Bali and my first trip to Asia, so we booked our stay through Inspirato, a curated luxury vacation members club, and the experience did not disappoint!
When we arrived at the Bali airport, we were greeted with a big smile and cold towels. Dewa, our driver during our stay, was so sweet and sincere and taught us a few Balinese words on the way to the hotel – suksma (thank you), suksma mewali (you’re welcome). Upon arrival at the Belmond, the front desk welcomed us with more cold towels and handed me a small flower bouquet wrapped in a banana leaf. Soon our butler appeared and gave us a quick tour of the property in a golf cart, driving us first by the beach bar where we were given a delicious welcome mocktail, made of orange juice, ginger, lime, mint and honey. Set on a beautiful, peaceful bay, the hotel has 44 cottages and 22 private villas, exquisitely laid out with lili ponds, lush landscaping and simple upscale, Balinese decor.
When we entered our private villa, we found, to our surprise, that there were two bungalow rooms separated by a gorgeous courtyard and lap pool, enclosed on all sides by walls, creating a sanctuary of privacy (click here for video tour)! Waiting inside our bedroom bungalow, were blueberry tarts, organic herb tea, and fresh mangosteen. We ordered an additional fruit plate, which showed up in 10 minutes, and ate that under the stars, followed by skinning dipping in the pool and falling asleep on one of our outside lounges in the moonlight. We ended the night with a rinse in the outdoor shower, with palm trees swaying softly overhead.
Over the next four days we enjoyed amazing buffet breakfasts overlooking a lily pond, had lunch, dinner and drinks on the beach at the hotel restaurant, and explored the town of Seminyak (much nicer than Kuta). We checked out Uluwatu Temple, had sunset cocktails at Rock Bar, had a blast surfing, and ended our stay with a fantastic couples massage at the hotel Beach Spa. I highly recommend booking a private villa at Belmond Jimbaran Puri for a honeymoon, romantic getaway, or an affordable luxury surf trip! It is now one of my favorite hotels, and I can’t wait for my next visit!
My only complaints about the hotel were that our king bed was made up of two (not very comfortable) mattresses that were pushed together. This did not allow us to cuddle (not ideal for a honeymoon), but this could be easily fixed with a king mattress topper! And like most hotels, the Belmond relies on plastic bottles to supply drinking water for guests. This was particularly alarming to me considering that when I jogged just 20 minutes up the beach, I found trash everywhere and people burning piles of trash (much of which was plastic bottles). Bali is beautiful, but the beach towns are very run down and there is trash everywhere along the roads. The Belmond is a pristine utopian paradise in an area that has been abused by tourists and locals for too many years. All over the world, we must stop using plastic water bottles and go back to drinking fountains and reusable bottles to protect the beauty that we all love!
The people of Bali are so kind and friendly, and most of them speak English, but they really appreciate you trying to speak Balinese. So when we made a small effort to say suksma, we were instantly rewarded with a big smile in return. Luxury hotels are very affordable in Bali. We booked our stay through Inspirato and got an amazing deal on our private villa. And the food is delicious! The restaurant at the hotel was by far my favorite. You really can’t beat fresh seafood on the sand at the water’s edge, and there are tons of great seafood BBQ spots just a short walk down the bay. I also recommend trying Sarong in Seminyak. Although it is not on the beach, it has a sexy vibe, and my husband said his tandoori snapper was the best fish he’s ever had! If you want to party, stop by La Favela after dinner. This place goes off!
WHERE TO SURF
There are dozens of amazing spots but during our short stay, we surfed at Legian (beginner), Dreamland (beginner/intermediate), and Balangan (intermediate). My husband is still learning so the hotel set up a surf guide who took us to Legian, just down from Kuta, which was fun for him, and then the guide took us to Balangan, which is a gorgeous beach with a fun left break! Steve sat at one of the beach restaurants there and had lunch while the guide took me out. On another day, Dewa took us to Dreamland for a sunset surf session. You can rent boards right on the beach at all of these spots, and all are within 30 minutes of the hotel.
