Home Volunteer
charity FAMILY / KIDS sustainability

In celebration of Earth Month, I am excited to share a new, eco-friendly gift idea with you! Recently I was invited to try out HomeVolunteer and I was impressed by their dedication to making the world a better place through their engaging, unique, experience kits.

HomeVolunteer allows you to learn about important causes through hands-on experience and it gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact – all from your home. Here is why I love HomeVolunteer experiences and why you’ll love them too!

Home Volunteer

Ben Sampson and Andy VandenBerg, the co-founders of HomeVolunteer and WeHero, started these ventures because of the frustration they experienced looking for high-impact volunteer experiences, coming up empty and feeling like the time they volunteered made little to no difference. So they joined forces in 2019 with a mission to make high-impact volunteering easy and accessible for all supporting the world’s best nonprofits.

Finding the right volunteer opportunity and ensuring you’re making an impact can be daunting and challenging. HomeVolunteer was created in response to the millions of individuals, families, and groups that are looking to fit volunteering into their busy lives. For those looking to make a difference, HomeVolunteer delivers that opportunity straight to your door!

The goal of HomeVolunteer’s Reforestation Project is to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of our environment while actually doing it! Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink and provide habitat to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. They also provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines.

Through the Reforestation Project, you’ll plant baby Giant Sequoias or Ponderosa Pines. These trees are some of the strongest and most durable trees in the world, and one tree can sequester 250 tons of carbon in its lifetime! (To put this into perspective a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.)

With this experience, you will be planting two trees yourself, and HomeVolunteer and One Tree Planted will plant another eight trees, which means you’ll bring 10 trees into the world!

I did the Reforestation Project experience with my daughter, Sadie, who is four years old. She loved learning about how important trees are and everything they do for us, and she was very excited to get her hands dirty and plant her own baby pine trees!

When I explained that we helped plant 10 trees she couldn’t believe it. Her response? “Mama, we planted a forest today!”

The Education Access Project gives you the opportunity to help deliver school supplies to underprivileged students. Sixteen million kids in the United States come from families struggling with extreme poverty. If these students are lucky enough to attend school, they often don’t have the resources to purchase the necessary school supplies.

With the Education Access Project, you’ll be putting together education access kits for two students that are designed to be fun and inspirational. The supplies you are providing are difficult to procure in the areas where these backpacks will be going, or are unaffordable for families. The backpacks are designed to be fun and to inspire the kids to go to school and stay in school!

Sadie, loved putting the Education Access school supply kits together and it gave me an important opportunity to talk with her about underprivileged children, how important school is, and how much these school supplies will mean to them.

Sadie especially loved getting to write personal notes to the children (with mom’s help) and thought they would love the squishy globe balls. She also loved decorating the drawstring backpacks.

As a mom, doing this experience made me teary-eyed thinking about the fact that there are so many children around the world, whose families can’t afford to buy them school supplies.

The most powerful aspect of these kits are the drawings you’ll do on the bags and the personal letters you’ll write. I’m happy we were able to include notes to let the kids know they have someone cheering them on to stay in school!

HomeVolunteer cares deeply about the environment and offsets carbon emissions created by shipping experiences directly to your home. If your experience requires sending the box to a nonprofit after you complete it, that shipment is also offset.

HomeVolunteer exclusively funds offsets certified by Verified Carbon Standard or Gold Standard and proudly invests in wind, solar and clean stove projects. It also provides an opportunity to learn about carbon offsetting.

Carbon Hero Offset Program

Home volunteer currently uses 100% recycled cardboard boxes and 100% recycled paper packaging for packing and shipping their experience boxes! They also use minimal packaging which helps cut down on waste and they have new boxes in the making right now that are printed with Algae-based ink as well!

There is also minimal plastic used in their experiences and they are currently looking into affordable, biodegradable alternatives. HomeVolunteer is a new company that is committed to making sustainable strides as they grow.

To live more sustainably we all need to consume less. I am not here, especially during Earth Month, to try to sell you something you don’t need. But if you are looking to volunteer, pay it forward, or looking for a unique, impactful gift idea then HomeVolunteer is for you!

This is a purchase that gives back, educates, and brings awareness to important challenges facing our society surrounding the environment, education, poverty, food supply, and agriculture. Thank you for caring. Happy Earth Day!
