Italians call Positano, “Heaven on earth,” and after my first visit, I now have to agree. From London, you hop on a 2.5 hr flight to Naples, and from there, you take an hour car ride down the Amalfi Coast to Positano. The drive is gorgeous, with jagged cliffs dropping straight into the ocean and green mountains, painted with colorful little towns, that shoot up to the sky. When you near Positano, the drive becomes reminiscent of a road trip on Highway 1 to Big Sur – the tiny two-lane road hugs the windy coast as islands and distant towns come into view across the sea.

When you first catch a glimpse of Positano, it will take your breath away. All the little houses, restaurants and shops hanging on cliffs, greet you with vibrant colors and rich, warm character. As you wind down through the small village of Positano, and make your way back up the mountain on the other side, you will pass La Sirenuse (a favorite hotel among luxury travelers), and then, just up the street, you will reach Hotel Marincanto. Hotel Marincanto is a four-star hotel with a world-class view. It is, by far, the best value for money I have ever spent on a hotel room. I would stay here again just for the view,  but this charming hotel has so much more to offer.

Although the best thing about our room was the view from our balcony, the room itself was large (by European standards), very clean, and tastefully decorated with minimalist, old-world charm. Breakfast is included and can be served on your balcony at no extra charge, or in the beautiful Terrace Restaurant, which also serves lunch, dinner, and drinks every day. Built into a cliff, Hotel Marincanto offers something new and beautiful around every corner.

If you follow the steps down, past the Terrance Restaurant, you will reach a lounge area and pool hanging on the cliff, overlooking the ocean. Follow the steps another level down, and you will find a sundeck overlooking the city and the sea. And then if you walk further, you will find more private nooks with lounge chairs, followed by steps that hug the cliff and lead you down a private path to the beach. On your way down, the pool boy will hand you a Hotel Marincanto Beach bag (that you can keep), with towels that you can lay out on any open chairs on the beach. Within a few minutes, a beach boy will come take your food and drink order – rose’ please! The beach chairs are €10 each and you can spend all day soaking up the sun at the water’s edge.

Positano is the perfect town for walking so you must spend at least one day exploring the town on foot. There are tons of great restaurants, shops and bars in town, but I highly recommend trying La Tagliata (located up in the mountains!) for dinner one night. The amount of food (and wine) you get for the price is insane, and it is so good that even though it is way too much, you will keep eating, so go starving! And for a romantic fine dining experience, you must try Rada Restaurant. It is on the water, built into a cliff, literally underneath Hotel Marincanto, so to get to dinner you can walk straight down the same path you took to the beach. After your meal, enjoy a nightcap at Music On The Rocks, which is a nightclub under Rada, inside the cliff. It is the only nightclub for miles around, and it looks like an actual cave. After a fun night of drinks and dancing, just head back up the path to your room.

Ladies, this is a walking city so do not bring heals. Nice sandals will suffice everywhere in Positano! You can visit Amalfi, or the island of Capri, by catching one of the daily ferries or taking a private boat. And be sure to book a superior room at Hotel Merincanto as they offer the best ocean views, and if you are traveling in a group, this room style can accommodate an extra bed for a third person – a perfect affordable option for a girls trip! If you would like more suggestions for what to do and see in this beautiful little town read: 20 Things To Do In Positano.

Hi Vanessa! What a beautiful post! My husband and I are heading to Italy for our honeymoon in a couple of weeks and we will definitely book this hotel! I was just wondering how long we should stay in Almalfi? I am really looking forward to our honeymoon. We were married five years ago and are only managing to go for one now!

Hi Melissa! Thanks for reading and commenting! So jealous you are heading to the Amalfi Coast! And you will LOVE Hotel Marincanto! Positano is the most beautiful, romantic, little town and this Hotel Marincanto is so charming. We flew from London and were only there for 3 nights but I did not want to leave. I think at least a week on the Amalfi Coast is must but you could happily do a few weeks if you had the time! Have so much fun on your honeymoon! Congrats! X

What time of year did you travel to Positano and what time of year do you recommend?? We are planning a trip to Positano for 2019 at Hotel Maricanto!

Hi Kristen! My husband and I went at the end of April. I suggest going in May though so it is a little warmer but you’ll still beat the summer crowds. You are going to love Hotel Marincanto! Please drink an extra glass of rose on the beach for me! 😉

My family is trying to plan a trip to Positano in July of 2019, and we fell in love with the pictures of Hotel Maricanto! We were wondering what the best way is to assure we get a booking. It seems very popular and like the availability will disappear quickly. Did you book directly with the hotel, or via a website like Tripadvisor? Thanks!

    • Reply Vanessa Rivers June 13, 2018 at 8:51 am

Hi! You guys will LOVE Hotel Marincanto! I want to go back with my daughter!I would suggest booking ASAP through their website or call the hotel directly to book. That is what I did. Hope you have an amazing family vacation!

Thank you! We have officially booked our stay and found that emailing Hotel Marincanto was the most effective way to get ahold of them. Can’t wait for our vacation!

Wonderful! Glad you got ahold of them and have booked your stay there! You are going to love your time in Positano! Enjoy!

Hi Kelly! We went in April! I recommend visiting at the beginning of May or in September. These shoulder months are warm yet less crowded with tourists! Enjoy! X, Vanessa

    Hi Vanessa,
What room type did you stay in at Hotel Marincanto?
Some pics on their website show tops of umbrellas and another shows a wall blocking some view. Do I ask for a room higher up and that would be maybe Superior or Junior Suite?

    • Reply Vanessa Rivers July 28, 2020 at 10:18 am

Hi Annette! We stayed in a superior room at Hotel Merincanto. Superior rooms offer the best ocean views, and if you are traveling in a group, this room style can accommodate an extra bed for a third person – a perfect affordable option for 3 friends, a girls trip or a couple with children. Enjoy!
