Vanessa Rivers grew up on a solar-powered, eco ranch on the Central Coast of California and went to college at UC Santa Barbara, where she fell in love with surfing. Surfing led Vanessa around the world and it was on one of these trips that she decided to combine her love of the ocean and nature to create an eco-friendly bikini line, SummerLove Swimwear (as seen in Sports Illustrated) and her private surf lesson company Surf Lessons with Vanessa.

Vanessa has visited over 50 countries and specializes in eco-travel, family travel, luxury travel, and surf destination reviews, working with luxury hotels such as Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Nikki Beach, and 1 Hotel Group, and top brands such as Google, Pepsi Group, Herbal Essences, and TUMI – see testimonials and press. She is Co-Founder of We Are Travel Girls (as seen in Forbes, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Oprah Magazine), a global community created to inspire, educate and empower female travelers, and a proud new mom to a little travel girl in the making named Sadie.

Vanessa recently lived in London for seven years before relocating back to California, to live in Malibu with her family. She spends much of her time traveling, documenting her adventures here on Glitter&Mud and on We Are Travel Girls.

Vanessa Rivers also comes from Hollywood lineage. She is the daughter of artist Christi Zabel and rock singer Johnny Rivers, stepdaughter of producer Todd Fisher, step-niece of actress Carrie Fisher, step-granddaughter of Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds, and claims her biggest accomplishment is managing to be semi-normal despite her celebrity family.

“I lost my mom to cancer when I was twenty-five and this has significantly affected how I view my time on earth,” says Vanessa. “She was my best friend and the person I looked up to the most in life. She, more than anyone, taught me to see the beauty in the world around me. She showed me, with the way she lived her life that, what makes a woman beautiful is her attitude towards the world. I miss her every single day, but I know she is with me always.

Life is short, so I try to have as much fun as possible, be kind to everyone I meet, and appreciate every day. I started Glitter&Mud to share my adventures and help people make the most of their travels. I don’t want to just take up space on this earth. I want to make a positive difference in the world, in as many ways as I can. I hope my stories inspire you to travel more, see the beauty in the world around you, laugh more, love more, and believe that anything is possible.”

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…it’s learning to dance in the rain” -Unknown

“Remember the past, plan for the future, but live for today, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come.” -St. Luke

“Travel makes you modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” -Gustave Flaubert

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” -Mark Twain

“If travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.” -Pico Iyer

“Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming – “WOW – What a Ride!” -Anon

My parents and I loved your father’s music when I was growing up. I live in Southern California and compete in bodybuilding and am no stranger to wearing bikinis on stage. I live less than a mile from the back and recently got into surfing and love that and the art of bodybuilding. I enjoy ocean scenery and anything that is coastal and warm. I appreciate the life I have and where I live.

I am a former editor and publisher at Surfer magazine. I was wondering if you might be interested in writing a review or an announcement about the book I just finished, First We Surf Then We Eat.
A PDF is attached so you can check it out.
It’s a travel, surf adventure cookbook, 90 recipes, ten chapters each one a surf region – Hawaii, Indonesia, France, Caribbean, Morocco, Peru, Mexico, California, South Pacific, & Central America. Each chapter has short stories about adventures, surf, restaurants, and markets in the region followed by a recipe. Full of colorful images of travel and food and great short vignettes of global travel and characters it is available at most fine surf shops, Barnes & Noble and other fine bookstores and on Amazon.
The perfect gift for anyone who knows a surfer, traveler, chef, or food lover it has something for everyone….
If you DO decide to blog about this let me know if you need anything – I have recipes, surf and travel shots which you can use free.
Best wishes for a great 2018,
