Located on Hydra, one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, Hotel Miranda was originally a wealthy sea captain’s mansion. This charming, boutique hotel, located in the heart of the main town of Hydra Port, was declared a building of National Heritage by the Ministry of Culture and is a characteristic example of the islands architecture. In 1821 the sea captains of Hydra played a prominent role in the Greek War of Independence, providing a complete navy of 158 ships maintained at their own expense.
It was during these years of high prosperity that the Miranda was built, and in 1962 the original mansion was converted into a hotel.
Offering 14 reasonably priced rooms, each unique and some with old hand-painted ceilings made by Venetian artists, Hotel Miranda is the perfect place to stay if you want an authentic Hydra experience or are traveling in a group or with a family. We paid 180€ during high season for a Special Room and were surprised to find that our room was actually a suite with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a private terrace overlooking the city. The hotel is decorated with 18th and 19th century furniture, prints and artifacts and is not “fancy,” but the rooms have flat screen TVs, are spacious AND have air conditioning, which is a must if you visit Hydra during the hot summer months.

There are no cars on Hydra but donkeys can be hired to take you up to the monasteries or to VLYCHOS Beach Club which is a 45 minute walk from Hydra Port and worth visiting as you get to see much of the island along the way…

We were excited to find the spiral staircase led to a cute private patio offering gorgeous views of Hydra.

Our crew walking to dinner at Sunset Restaurant (great food and beautiful views). Hydra Island was my favorite destination on our Yacht Week Greece trip and I hope to return someday soon!
