I know it’s recently become trendy to travel solo, but I will never be one of those women who likes traveling on my own. Don’t get me wrong. I have traveled solo plenty of times. When I was in my twenties, I spent two months island hopping my way around Hawaii, sleeping in surf hostels and in my surfboard bag on the beach. But now, in my early thirties, I prefer to plan trips where a friend, or my husband can join me. But Mondo Surf & Lifestyle Village is one of those rare places that I would go back to, on my own, in a heartbeat. If you are a girl (or guy) looking for a fun, solo surf adventure, Mondo is the perfect place to stay!

Located in the beautiful and vibrant community of Canggu, Mondo Surf & Lifestyle Village is the perfect location for you to experience the best of what Bali has to offer. Mondo offers affordable surf, yoga, and martial arts retreats packages at a beautiful location, just outside of town, near the beach, surrounded by  rice terraces, amidst a lush tropical jungle. And Canggu, with all its great restaurants and shops, is only a short drive away.

There are just 6 rooms at Mondo Resort: 2 shared dorm style rooms (mixed male/female), 2 deluxe rooms that sleep 3 people, and 2 private bungalows that sleep 3 people. So you can choose to stay in a deluxe room on your own if you prefer a private accommodation, or you can go with a more affordable option and stay in one of the dorm rooms. Mondo is planning to expand and offer additional rooms in the future, but right now the limited occupancy means you get to meet a small crew of very cool people during your stay!

After spending almost two weeks in Bali, working on We Are Travel Girls with fellow Founder Becky van Dijk, it was time to have some fun in the sun and do some much needed surfing and yoga! So we headed to Mondo for a three-day retreat, and the experience did not disappoint. They welcomed us with an amazing BBQ, which was basically a huge feast, where all the guests got to meet, mingle, and eat together. After making some new friends, eating way too much, and drinking a few Bintang from the honor bar, I headed to my room to get some sleep. Becky stayed in a bungalow near the river, that runs along the resort, and I stayed in one of the deluxe rooms, which I really liked. The room was spotless, the AC worked great (a must in Bali!), my bed was super comfortable, and my bathroom was huge!

I woke up the next morning well rested and ready for 7:30AM yoga! I am not a morning person, and especially not a morning work-out person, and I am really not that great at yoga, but there was no way I was going to miss a yoga class being held just outside my door, next to a river, in the jungle, in Bali. I can sleep when I am dead.

After yoga, one of the kind staff at Mondo will serve you a yummy breakfast along with coffee, tea and juice (breakfasts are included in your retreat package). There are several options to choose from but my favorite was the healthy nourish bowl, which I ate every morning. After breakfast, it’s time to surf!

Currently, Mondo has surf camp instructors that come and pick up guests at 9:45AM and take them on an all-day surf excursion. You do a 2-hour surf lesson in the morning, following by and 1.5hr lunch, and then another 2-hour afternoon surf session. The instructors try to choose a beginner break to go to which is great for people just learning to surf and for intermediate surfers. If you are an advanced surfer you will want to go to some better spots, which is why Mondo is now going to start offering their own surf safaris, individually catered to beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers. During our stay, there was a huge swell so we had to go down to Kuta and Jimbaran Bay where it was safe for beginners to surf, but normally you will go to one of the many greats surf spots near Canggu.

I loved everything about my stay at Mondo but what stood out the most to me where the owners, Quico, Arvid and Bruno. These three friends came together to create their dream of having a cool surf, yoga and martial arts retreat where people can arrive as guests and leave feeling like they are part of a family. And you really do get this vibe when you are there. I felt very welcome and relaxed during my stay, and found myself thinking this is a great place for girls to come on their own and have a chill, surf/yoga vacation in a safe, fun environment. If you are thinking of going on a solo adventure to Bali, I highly recommend staying at Mondo!

I was welcomed at Mondo Surf & Lifestyle Village as a guest, but as always, my opinions are my own.
