Iceland is a Nordic country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It has a population of 325,671 and an area of 40,000 sq mi, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Reykjavik, where we stayed, is the capital and largest city. Iceland’s topography boasts amazing natural wonders; lava fields, glaciers, glacial rivers, waterfalls and sweeping landscapes dotted with beautiful lakes and spewing geysers.
Iceland is geologically and volcanically active, with the last volcanic eruption occurring just four years ago, in April 2010. Our private tour guide Mio, from Arctic Adventures, told us stories of this eruption along with tales of Icelandic Sagas. We saw the Northern Lights and amazing waterfalls. We hiked a glacier, visited a black sand beach and took an ATV tour through rugged mountains, rivers and valleys. And we stood at the breathtaking Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American plate and the Eurasian plate meet!

MY EXPERIENCE
Iceland was not on my Bucketlist. With so many amazing places to visit, it wasn’t even on my radar. But in April my friend Misha (Fair Verona Travel) and her husband Tom came to stay with us in London, and they wanted to visit another country while in Europe. Misha is very adventurous so when Iceland was thrown out as an option she said let’s go for it! Before I knew it we were headed to Reykjavik!
The food in Iceland was fresh and delicious, the people were nice, and from the one night we went out in Reykjavik, we experienced how much they love to party! Iceland is only a short flight away from most places in Europe and although it is a trek from the US, it’s really worth seeing. The natural wonders will blow your mind, and I’m sure you’ll be left like me, wanting to go back again and again.
WHERE TO STAY: 101 Hotel in Reykjavik and Ion Luxury Hotel in the middle of nowhere!
MUST VISIT: Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, Check out Misha’s full review>> here.
WHERE TO DINE: Good food everywhere but the restaurant at Hotel Geysir was my favorite of all the places we tried.
DID YOU KNOW: The World Economic Forum ranks Iceland highest in the world for gender equality. About 85% of all houses in Iceland are heated with geothermal energy. Iceland has one of the highest book publishing rates. Three Icelandic women have won the Miss World Pageant.
